I also want it to help me as a new mom. I will post what he is up to, and also questions I am having along the way. Feel free to offer any advice, comments, suggestions etc......Genevievehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10484967142050535398noreply@blogger.comBlogger16125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6479953406283640769.post-10628588258006704222011-12-17T09:50:00.000-06:002011-12-17T09:50:30.696-06:008 and 1/2 months......we have been BUSY!As you can tell I have let this blog go a little longer than I had anticipated. I thought I would take the opportunity to do some major catch up while Joe is at his overnight with Grandma and Grandpa. We had a wonderful White Elephant Party to attend last night courtesy of our good friends the Clarks, and we needed to have Joe stay the night at Grandma's.
Ok, so what has happened the last 3 months? Well, Joe has mastered the art of sitting up, pulling himself into his sitting position when he is lying down, crawling and also he has started to try to pull himself up. We have met Santa, been to Nordstroms too many times to count, had play dates, gotten through 2 vicious colds (why are they always worse in babies?), welcomed new friends Baby Abram and Baby Jordan, and also a new cousin Marco. We also have moved to the regular tub for baths and he loves it! We did buy an Elmo faucet cover and it drives him nuts that he can't grab Elmo. I have to say I wasn't prepared for how SLIPPERY he is in the regular tub! It is quite hilarious....any suggestions out there moms??? It has been an exciting couple of months and I wouldn't change a thing.
So far we haven't hit the separation anxiety piece, but all of the books that I am reading say it is on its way.......we shall see. Enjoy the pics below!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">These past few weeks have been great with Baby Joe. He has made some major developmental milestones, and also we are getting in to the swing of solid foods. I decided after much thought to go ahead and make my own baby food. A good friend of mine is a working mom and she does it and <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">convinced me it won't take too much time. Well, after I bought the Beaba Babycook, I realized she was right. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Beaba Babycook

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">All I do is spend about an hour (if it's meats, because you have to precook) or less (if its veggies because it will steam and cook them for you) on Sunday and I have my food. I also bought some GREAT trays to store the foods in and they just freeze overnight and pop out.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Mumi and Bubi Solid Starter Freezer Trays

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I then put them in a freezer bag and date and I have his food for a month (meats) and 3months (veggies). So far I have made turkey, chicken, sweet potatoes, and peas. My next item will be butternut squash and maybe green beans. He REALLY likes his foods. The only thing I am struggling with is a schedule. I do have his 6 month visit coming up so I am going to make sure what I am doing is ok. As my doctor said at our 4 months, "Gen, you can't screw this up." I figure I am doing ok and will ask at the next visit.

I am also so excited to report that yesterday I had Joe on the floor sitting up between my legs and he sat up and reached for toys unassisted!!!!! I literally started scooting back and he was SITTING UP!!!!! WOOOHOOO!!! I have to admit I was terrified I was going to miss that one by being at work.....now if we can get through him walking at home and not while I am at work, I will be set! He is progressing perfectly on his developmental chart as well. The only thing he hasn't done yet is roll over front to back. He has rolled over back to front several times, and the other is something he will start doing, or could not come until 6 months. Either way, he is doing fabulous! Oh well, i heard a lot about it after Joe came and I think it's pretty (as the same friend would say) "topnotch"! The Bumbo for those who don't know, helps your baby sit up. Now, you can only use the Bumbo if your baby can hold his head up. (You may laugh at this next part if you are a mother who knows more than me) I wasn't quite sure if Joe could hold his head up or not. Ok, let em explain that statement. In my defense, my child HATES tummy time, and I thought holding head up meant in relation to tummy time etc....so I was a little nervous about putting him in the Bumbo. Needless to say, all the times he is looking around in my arms etc....he is holding his head up, so we were safe! Here's my cutie pie in his Bumbo. Ha Ha Ha!!! Chuckle Chuckle
I mean belly laughs!!! His favorite two things that get him to laugh are the ever popular Raspberries. If you ever need a lesson or two in giving a good raspberry, just give me a holler. Also, Mike leans in really quick and gives him kisses on his neck (let's be serious though, you can't find my kid's neck even if you had a magnifying glass), or neck area and he thinks it is hysterical. So chuckle, chuckle and next time you laugh, remember there is a new baby boy in this world who has now joined you! And with parents such as myself and Mike, this kid will be laughing his whole life!!!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
Genevievehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10484967142050535398noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6479953406283640769.post-31245222070980023622011-07-11T15:43:00.000-05:002011-07-11T15:43:29.382-05:00Lots of MMMMMMMssss!<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">A momentous occasion, a new month, a Mohawk and a mountain...these are the topics of this week's blog. I have some MAJOR (hey another "M" word) catching up to on this blog, so settle back with a snack or a cup of your favorite liquid and get ready to read.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">First-The Momentous Occasion!!! Joseph was baptised on June 26th at our new church we joined, St. James the Greater. It was a lovely day and a beautiful ceremony. The Deacon is also the funeral director at Bopp Chapel, and he handled both of my grandparents' funerals, so he had a special place for the Donnelly family in his heart. Joe wore a christening gown that has been on the Betz side of the family for 103 years! He looked adorable.....just like his Daddy did when he was baptised!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">After the Baptism, we continued celebrating at a party at Mike's parents house.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">A new month! Yep, Joe is officially in his 3rd month and is 15 weeks old! I really can't believe how much time has flown by. He is so social now. He smiles all the time, coos and is the nosiest baby I have ever seen. I love to watch him grow and learn new things every day. He has really started to enjoy his Lovey and self soothing in his crib by sucking his thumb. We opted to skip the stickers that you place on the onesies at every month and instead put this Silver Frame from Pottery Barn Kids on our registry to capture each month. Here is a link, and here is a picture of the frame so far.

We were also VERY lucky to have my mom and step dad, and 2 sisters there to join us. This gave us a chance to do some things without the baby such as white water raft, horseback ride and spend a night alone in Steamboat Springs. We had a great time and it was so neat to see how much Aunt Amelia and Aunt Beth truly adore their nephew. I don't think that baby wanted for anything or cried more than a minute without someone there to love on him. I really am so <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">impressed with my sisters and brothers and how much they love and adore him. We took Joe to Winter Park, shopping at Grand Lake, and on many hikes in his BOB Jogger. That jogger was awesome on hikes and through rough terrain. He even went up the mountain of Sol Vista on the ski lift (safely secured in his Baby Bjorn and with a safety strap) and then down the mountain on a hike. For 4th of July we watched the kid friendly parade in the Town of Granby. He loved most of it, but had a bit too much fun and had to take a nap.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The only downside of the trip was that we had "that" baby on the plane ride back. You know the one-screaming, crying and everyone is giving the baby and the parents the evil eye. Yes, unfortunately that was us for about 40 minutes of the flight off an on. We did have the perfect baby on the way there, so 1 out of 2 isn't so bad...at least he wasn't bad on both rides. Stay tuned for next week when I am sure it won't be so long...........

Anyway, these past couple of weeks have been all about SLEEP!!! I have really started to follow my doctor's advice about scheduled nap times, and the book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby is literally my bible. Joey is now ok at his morning nap around 9, and has a solid 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon! I can then count on one more 4t5-1hour nap early evening, a catnap for about 20 minutes at 7:30ish, and then to bed between 8:30-9pm. I think I am doing things relatively correct. He also had another overnight and did wonderfully!! The nap schedules were followed and he did a great job!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">He's a fish!! No, at his 10 week mark Joey didn't turn in to a marine animal, but he did take his first swim. I was counting on the fact that he would scream and cry since bath times can be a bit iffy, but he was GREAT!! I then felt relieved because Mike and I both love the water, and are both certified scuba divers, so we can't wait to get Joey in to swim lessons, the ocean, scuba diving, and snorkeling. My little guy swirled around the water (with Daddy's help) and was all smiles. I think I was most excited about how darn cute he was in his trunks and pirate hat. I know there are a ton of pictures, but I just couldn't narrow them down to just a few!
<span style="color: purple; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">At the doctor last week I explained how we were having great success with a bedtime routine and getting Joey down for his bedtime. I also then explained that mornings and afternoons were still a problem. I am especially having problems in the morning. I took my doctor's advice this week and began letting Joey cry when he goes down for naps. The theory is if he goes down at the same time every day, he will get used to it and stop crying. I notice Joey gets very sleepy around 9-10am. This week marked my (as I call it) Mean Mommy stage. Yep, I am officially beginning the Ferber method and letting him cry (in fact, he is crying on the monitor while I am typing this). This has really made me lose my mind on many occasions. Hopefully this week it goes better. Stay tuned.........................
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Question of the week:
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Should I expect a growth spurt every 3 weeks???Genevievehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10484967142050535398noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6479953406283640769.post-54619618950799510932011-06-01T11:22:00.000-05:002011-06-01T11:22:24.443-05:002 Months!!!<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Memorial Day Weekend was a HUGE one for us!! Saturday marked Joey's first overnight without Mommy and Daddy. He (happily) went over to Grandma and Grandpa Mike's house for a great night. I later found out that not only did my sister come over, but my aunt and uncle decided they should go over and visit too. Joey sure does draw a crowd! Apparently he did outstanding and he slept from 10:30-5:30 when Grandma decided to wake him up because she was a bit nervous. As many of you know my mom is a beekeeper so sure enough when I arrived to pick him up, Joey was dressed in a cute little outfit with bees all over it. My mom's friend Maureen gave it to her. According to my step dad within 5 minutes of me leaving him, my mom had him changed in to the Bee Outfit.
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Sunday was my big guy's 2 month birthday! I can't believe he is that old. Yesterday we hit 9 weeks and he is definitely getting more social. We also went to the doctor for his 2 month visit and he is doing and I quote "wonderfully! I am soo pleased with his development and he is extremely alert!" Thank you very much Dr. E! He is 12lbs 15oz now (which let's just round to 13) and he is 22 3/4inches long now. By the way if any moms to be are reading this and want a great recommendation fro a Pediatrician that is located in the DesPeres, Kirkwood area, let me know. We ADORE ours!!!!
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">On Sunday he also FINALLY met his Uncle Tyler (A.K.A Twood)!! Tyler has been finishing out his freshman year of baseball at Furman University and was the last of the Aunts/Uncles to meet Joey. Needless to say I think Joey spent a good 2 hours in Uncle Twood's arms!!
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I hope everyone has a great week! Here is a FABULOUS outfit given to us by Aunt Heidi!!
This week Joey has really started to raise his head and keep it up. His neck muscles have been hard at work this week!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">We also have had a full week of 6 hour stretches at night and (dare I say) the midnight feedings are a thing of the past! Yesterday was a bit scary with all of the bad weather and tornado warnings. However I had a huge breakthrough and finally went down to my basement when the sirens went off. For those of you who know the situation, you can understand how difficult it was for me to finally go down in to my basement. Thankfully Joey remained asleep the whole time, and Sadie and Trigger just snuggled up next to us on the couch while we waited out the storm.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This weekend will mark 2 big events for Joey and myself. He will have his first overnight babysitting stay at Grandma and Grandpa's house. Needless to say I have been pumping up a storm so he can have enough milk for the stay. I hope it goes well for him and for me. Also on Sunday my BIG guy will be 2 months old!!! It is hard to believe he is already 2 months. Time goes by so quickly.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!
Every book and article that I have read about growth spurts give such a quick, nondramatic account of what will take place during a growth spurt. It usually states that it is around 3 weeks, 6 weeks, (I have blocked out the next one for right now) that the baby will want to feed constantly, and it can last a few days. UH where is the dramatic part??? The part that states your baby will cry and cry and NOT sleep. That he will want to feed ALL the time and you will be even more sleep deprived than you already are? Plus you will worry that maybe it isn't a growth spurt but maybe he is sick? Or maybe there is something wrong with the baby. Welcome to Week 7 at the Betz Household!! Are you getting the picture??? It started Sunday and its Tuesday.....I was so looking forward to posting for this week because from Monday of last week to Saturday Joseph slept 6 hours straight and skipped his midnight feeding. I was thinking this is it, we are finally starting a nighttime routine. I can do this. We made it through the hell of the first month......AND THEN THE GROWTH SPURT!!!!!!!!!!! Hopefully next week I will have better reports and I don;t have to write the word growth spurt for a LONG time...if another one is coming up please don;t tell me for at least another week.

My mommy FINALLY caught my smile on camera! More to come I am sure.........

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This week my little guy figured out he has some pretty awesome fingers. He has been jammin' those little suckers in his mouth whenever he can. Research says to not worry about it at this point. Babies suck on their fingers to help them self soothe at this age. In fact, you don't have to worry about it until quite a few months down the road. He gets very excited when he connects with his fingers and his eyes get extremely big.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">He also has been making a ton of cooing and ahhing noises. He loves to lay in his crib and look up, kick around, say "ahhh" and coo. It is getting a lot more fun for me and Mike as he is now responding to us and interacting with us. This little guy also gave us 2 nights in a row of 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep!!! WOO HOO!!!! Unfortunately one of those nights was NOT the night mommy and daddy went out with friends and sat on the Beer Garden. Oh well........we are totally in love with him anyway.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Finally this week I was able to celebrate my very first Mother's Day. It was really a great day and I am so lucky and blessed to have Joseph in my life. I know I will make a lot of mistakes but hopefully I will turn out have as GREAT and FABULOUS as my own mother.

Questions for the week:
How do you know when he can ride in the stroller without the infant seat? (I have a GRACO METROLITE and a BOB REVOLUTION JOGGER)
How long do you let your baby play in between feedings and naps so he/she doesn't get too overstimulated?
Joe is starting to become more alert and awake during the day. We also made it 4 1/2 hours one night of uninterrupted sleep! Joseph really likes his activity mat as well. He loves to lay down on it and kick his legs, swing his arms, and look around. Plus, I highly recommend it. It has all of the colors that research says is great for babies and he loves to look at the (semi obnoxious) light up, sound, bug thingy that hangs down. The other GREAT thing about it is how you can get it out of the way so quick. It literally folds and we slide it around the room or under the crib. It also is not just geared (as far as colors etc...) for a boy, so if we have another child we can use it if the baby is a girl. Here is a link to it for any moms to be.
It felt great to get out of the House and be with adults. Plus the grandparents love the time with Joseph. I am going to make it a definite point to try to get out at least once every weekend, or 3 weekend nights a month, and do something non-kid related. I already received an email asking if Mike and I wanted to get out this Saturday night...don't mind if we do!
Genevievehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10484967142050535398noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6479953406283640769.post-9892327870092693742011-04-27T14:38:00.000-05:002011-04-27T14:38:06.193-05:00The hardest week yet............<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This has been the hardest week I think yet. We have had some 12 hour blasts of no sleeping, and some 1 1/2 to 2 hour times in between feedings. I have received a lot of advice, some conflicting, and have tried to implement some of the changes. A successful suggestion was to change the sound machine I have. I registered for one that had music and nature sounds. I also was given a sound machine at a shower that had music and white noise on it. Well I have ditched the one I registered for and gone ahead and switched to the White Noise sound machine. I believe it is working better and my pediatrician confirmed that thought for me when he stated he used the "white noise" sound machines for his kids. Check that off the list as a successful change.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Another suggestion that was given to me was to swaddle him with his arms in. Joseph LOVES his arms and hands!!! He HATES to have them swaddled while he is awake, but that is changing this evening. Starting tonight I am going to take another piece of advice and begin swaddling his arms as well. I also am heading to a store called Cotton Babies tonight to grab some specific swaddle blankets by "aden and anais" that have been suggested to me as great for babies that are growing!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This week we also have been to see the doctor twice, and I had to get over that embarrassment and just accept that it is their job to help. Last week it was for tummy gas, and today was for them to make sure he was "medically" okay and this wasn't something other than being an infant. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The GREAT news is that we also just went ahead and did his 1 month checkup today instead of Monday. He is in the 75% for weight, height and head circumference. He is already 10lbs 13oz. He definitely is a healthy, growing big guy!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">A fun change that happened is he now really seems to know that his legs, arms, and hands are attached to his body. He is loving his activity mat and kicking and waving his arms. He also has started some great little "ahh" sounds and cooing noises.
For starters on the LOW side, daddy went back to work. This is really hard on me. I think mainly because of his job in law enforcement he does 2 weeks of days and then 2 weeks of nights. We have made it through 4 days of him back to work but it is tough! I think because I feel like I am so alone, especially at night. I also have had a few times where Joe decides to either cry or ONLY sleep if he is held and that has been quite tricky to be able to maneuver (especially if you need to go to the bathroom, but I figured out a way).
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Another LOW has been the fussiness. It can really frustrate a person. He is fussy at different times and it seems he is only fussy around us. When the grandparents are there to help, or my 2 sisters, he is PERFECT. I struggle with how to get through those times, but I just take deep breaths. Any other suggestions mommies????
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Finally the last LOW is the crib issue. Joe will fall asleep in someones arms, in a swing, in a vibrating bassinet, and while feeding. However, the second I put him in his crib 8 out of 10 times he is up and crying. Any advice????
Yeah, no more nasty black thing in the way. I was also lucky to have it fall off with Mike, and he was able to retrieve it so we didn't have an unwelcome surprise later.
Yes, the little guy is smiling!!! I have gotten him to smile twice with responding to me, but the other times he smiles mostly while he is feeding. All the books that I am reading say these are true smiles and not gas. Also he is experimenting with when to smile. I LOVE it when he is smiling and alert. He also has been focusing more this week and that is exciting. He really likes to stare at his mommy and daddy.
Trigger is 80lbs and Sadie is 60lbs. They both have been great with Joe and are very content with him. Trigger does what I call a "perimeter patrol" around the nursery. He has different sniff checkpoints. Sadie is not quite as smart as Trigger so it actually took her a week to figure out we even had a baby in the home. Her favorite thing to do is sniff Joe with her cold, wet nose. I am hoping things stay this way and there is never an issue.
However lately I have been feeling I don't have anything that is mine, so I thought about starting a new project. I had my job, but I have been off since March 7th, and an active social life, but that had to stop because of bed rest. So today I decided it may be a good idea to write about my new baby and being a new mom. I feel as though I am going through this blind and maybe other new moms, and experienced moms can relate to what I go through this first year. I also feel like this could be a great way to get advice and have other moms let me know hints, tips and tricks. Since Joseph and I are heading into week 3, I figured my first post could be more of a catch up of what has been happening so far.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The Birth Story-Joseph's due date was April 4th, however he arrived March 29th. I was admitted to the hospital March 28th and given Cervadil. This medication ripens and softens the cervix to get it ready for birth and is followed by being induced. When I arrived I was 2 cm dilated, 50% effaced, and his head was at -3. Within an hour of the Cervadil I was 3 cm dilated. I was given an Epidural because I felt a lot of strange pains which were contractions. I tried to go as long as I could, but maybe subconsciously II knew something was wrong. At around 4am the contractions were coming back to back and my blood pressure was skyrocketing. After intense monitoring, Joseph's heart rate began to drop as well. The doctor was able to get that under control, but then my blood pressure dropped to 69/41, and the decision to do an emergency c-section was made. After the operation we found out that our baby was truly a miracle! His cord had a slip knot in it, resembling a pretzel, and every time he moved into the birth canal it tightened and straightened. If we had done a vaginal birth he probably wouldn't have made it, and we wouldn't have our beautiful baby boy.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Week 1- This first week took place in the hospital for 5 days, and at home for 2. The hospital experience was pretty easy and nice. I had many visitors and a lot of help and advice from the nursing staff. I even gave in to the professional photographers that came by and took pictures! I began breastfeeding right away and he took to it pretty well. The lactation consult was extremely helpful and visited twice. I cried when we took him home and was very emotional. I kept asking myself could I do this? Was I ready to be a mom? What if I messed up? Am I really prepared? Did I read enough information? Did I ask the right questions? I still ask myself questions such as those every day, but I have began to accept that I can do this, and I will make mistakes.
My last living grandparent fell down our stairs while visiting Joseph. She was brain dead and died at the hospital. I never thought I would be attending a wake and a funeral his 2nd week of life. I was extremely close to my grandma and talked with her at least once a week on the phone and saw her several times a month. On the positive side she spent an amazing hour with him and right before it happened a beautiful picture was taken of the two of them. I would post that picture but I have not had the courage to look at it yet. When I can I will post it.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">So I promise to not make all posts this long and winded, but like I said I figured I would do some catch up. Next week will be all about week 3. Also if anyone has any advice on beginning to introduce a bottle and pumping, I would GREATLY appreciate it!!!Genevievehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10484967142050535398noreply@blogger.com1
